Plants

Learning About Plants
For the last two weeks we have been learning all about how plants grow.  Children learned about the life cycle of a plant and what a plant needs to survive.  We used Carnation Flowers and Celery to show how the stems act like a straw and drink up the water.  We placed these plants in water and watched how they turned color over the course of the week.  Children also had the opportunity to plant their own cup of grass seed.  On our doors we have bags with lima beans and wet paper towels that are beginning to sprout.  We have had so much fun learning about plants and flowers and the children have even been looking closely at the plants on our playground.

Plant Tasting Party
Many thanks to all of the families that donated various fruits, veggies, or seeds for our plant tasting party!  Some kids were so amazed to know that the carrot that they were eating was the root part of the plant!  We set up a buffet of plant parts in the hall and children enjoyed watching a movie about plants while they ate.  Children loaded up on seeds, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits and we were very proud of how willing all of the boys and girls were to try each item!

Zoo Trip!

Save the Date!!!

Detroit Zoo entrance near Woodward Ave in Royal Oak, MI

Today we reserved our field trip to the Detroit Zoo!  This memorable trip is scheduled for Friday, May 20th.  We do not have a limit on chaperone - however we ask that only one parent per family volunteer- we would not have room on our bus for everyone!  If both parents are interested in going- one could meet us at the zoo.

In the past we have had between 10-12 parents come along which means that a pair of chaperones are in charge of watching over only 4 kids.  We will be sending information home in a couple of weeks about chaperoning, filling out background check forms, the cost of the trip and how to pay for it, etc.  We just wanted to give you a heads up so that you can "save the date" if you are interested in joining us as a chaperone!  Please note that this is an ALL DAY field trip.  We will leave at 9:00 and return around 1:45.

Surprise Assembly!

The kids at Bemis Elementary have been working hard to read as much as they can during the month of March.  Our school set the goal that we would read 500,000 minutes during reading month.  We were so proud of ourselves when we found out that not only did we reach our goal and become better readers... but we were rewarded with a surprise assembly!  Our school wide theme during the month of March has been, "Reading Under the Big Top."  Today we had a circus come to our school!   There were two perfomers who juggled and rode unicycles and did majic tricks!  We were so impressed and loved it when they called a fellow Kindergartner, Tanner, up to try and ride a teeny tiny bike.  It was a great way to celebrate all of our reading progress!
